Berj Busua is the home of the Berj Artist Residency Program, launched by the Joyce Quarshie Foundation as part of the Hannah Kudjoe project, aimed at honoring the legacy of Hannah Kudjoe (a pivotal figure in Ghana's quest for independence) and supporting women creatives and socio-political artists.
In July 2025, Berj Busua opened as a residency space in Busua featuring a gallery, and a studio for artists. The goal is for Berj Busua to become a space that serves as both a creative and information hub, fostering dialogue and exchange for visiting artists and the local community.
his initiative is inspired by the legacy of Hannah Esi Badu Dadson, grand-aunt to Berj’s founder. A pioneering activist in Ghana’s independence movement, she was instrumental in mobilizing efforts to free the Big Six from colonial custody. Berj Busua, launched under the Hannah Kudjoe Initiative through the Joyce Quarshie Foundation, continues this legacy, creating a space that nurtures creative resistance, collaboration, and empowerment.
