A Landmark Beginning: Berj Busua Opens with “Fragments of Knowing”

Berj Busua| Western Region | Ghana

Last weekend marked a defining moment in our journey.

The soft opening of Berj Busua, our newest chapter rooted on Ghana’s western coast. This space has been in the making for some time, shaped by a vision to expand the presence of contemporary African art into environments where creativity, community, and nature are already deeply intertwined.

Our opening exhibition, “Fragments of Knowing,” curated by the brilliant Kukua Kweku-Badu (@thekukua), brought together a phenomenal group of artists: Owusu Ankomah, Patience Kofuma Annan, Ray Agbo, Kojo Biney, James Cudjoe, Essel Ekuban, Mia Ghogho, Kobina Nyarko, Helena Ama Sackey, and Elijah Sofo. Each artist offered a powerful piece of a larger narrative—one about memory, intuition, and the ways we come to understand ourselves and each other.

But the story began even before our doors opened.

Kojo Biney’s ecological installation had already begun to reconfigure the surrounding space, inviting early visitors and locals to consider the life cycle of materials and the role we play in shaping our environment. Around the same time, Ray Agbo’s conceptual performance in the Odo Valley offered a bold, immersive encounter with sound, movement, and symbolism. Together, these pre-exhibition activations set the tone for everything that followed—thoughtful, boundary-pushing, and deeply connected to the land.

When the gallery finally opened that evening, the energy was unmistakable. Guests poured in from all directions: local children, artists from across Ghana, international travelers, and longtime friends of Berj. Conversations sparked effortlessly. Some of the muses behind the artworks found themselves in the spotlight, becoming unexpected stars of the night. The experience was intimate yet expansive, grounded in both celebration and reflection.

More than just a launch, it was a gathering of community and creative spirit—the kind that reminds us why we do what we do. “Fragments of Knowing” invited people not only to view art but to connect, question, and feel.

We’re incredibly grateful to the Goethe-Institut Nigeria (@goetheinstitut_nigeria) for supporting this journey, and to the Busua community for embracing this new space with so much warmth and openness. You’ve affirmed what we’ve always believed: that art lives most fully when it’s held by people.

This is only the beginning.
Berj Busua is not just a space—it’s a commitment to growing with intention, to platforming African voices, and to making art a shared, living experience.

We can’t wait to welcome you again.
